BEAUDESERT RIFLE CLUB
The Beaudesert Rifle Club was formed in 1903 by Dr Beet, a local doctor, and some interested friends and was the sixth rifle club formed under the Queensland Rifle Association which was formed in 1861.
For the locals, this was considered a sport not unlike tennis or cricket but also formed a local rifle corp. reserve unit which was encouraged by the military who supplied .45/70 calibre rifles and ammunition to rifle clubs free of charge. The club later changed to the more accurate .303 rifle sometime around 1914 but most club rifles where returned to the army for re-furbishing for military use. Some were returned to the club after the war.
The original range was built on what is now the Beaudesert Golf Club course but was moved (for safety reasons), to what is now Braford Estate in about 1935.
In 1966, the club moved to its present location at Tabragalba, a large farm owned by Mr Munro Chandler and family who later sold the property to the Queensland government to become part of the now defunct Glendower Dam.
Prior to the property at Tabragalba hosting the rifle club, the land was used as an army camp and training ground for groups such as the Singapore coast watcher and Z- Force, famous for their heroic attack on the Japanese navy in Singapore harbour during WW2. The remains of the 300 yard training range can still be found on the property and evidence of large metal targets riddled with .9mm bullet holes where found nearby. The property is still littered with UXO (unexploded ordinance) and muffled explosions can be heard during burn-offs.
The Beaudesert Rifle Club Inc. was once a small club which attracted local farmers, tradesmen and young men to the sport for some Sunday relaxation and competition but from its earliest days, the club has produced a number of state Queens’s prize winners and both state and national team members starting with Dr Beet who represented Queensland in 1906. Currently, the club can boast two state team members, three national team members in two different shooting disciplines and three Queen’s prize winners.
The Beaudesert Rifle Club Inc. is now the largest rifle club in Queensland with over 160 members shoot long range target rifle, rim-fire competition matches and clay target shotgun and also hosts the Jimboomba Air-force Cadets. The club has also run Police Weapons Branch approved safety courses since 2002 and has trained over 2500 people in firearm safety. The club is looking at expanding in the coming years by adding a military rifle club and an archery club to cater for the increasing interest in the shooting sports.
